Master baht bus, Grab, taxis, and motorcycle rentals. Learn exactly how much things cost, how to avoid tourist traps, and when to use each transport method for Pattaya nightlife.
The baht bus (songthaew) is the workhorse of Pattaya transport. Red or blue shared vans that operate fixed routes along Beach Road and Second Road. Cost inside the city: 10 THB fixed. Distance doesn't matter โ 1km or 5km, same price. Longer routes outside the core (to airport, Bangkok) cost more โ negotiate or ask locals for the price.
How to flag one: Stand on Beach Road or Second Road and hold your hand up. The driver will slow down if they're heading your direction. Point and say your destination. Get on, sit down, and wait for your stop. Drop off is anywhere along the route โ just say "Stop here" or ask the driver.
Best for: Getting to Soi Buakhao, Walking Street, or any nightlife area from your hotel. After 2AM baht buses are sparse, so plan to use Grab for late-night returns. Watch our live stream to time your nights and avoid waiting forever.
Pro tip: Always confirm the price in your head before saying where you're going. Touts at hotels will tell you "baht bus costs 100" โ it doesn't. 10 THB always, inside city limits.
Grab is Southeast Asia's ride-hailing app and operates in Pattaya. Download the Grab app, add your Thai phone or email, and book rides like Uber. Prices are shown upfront โ no surprise charges, no negotiation.
Setup: Download the app, log in with email or phone, add a payment method (credit card or Thai bank account). Your first ride might take 5-10 minutes as drivers are spread across the city. Later rides usually arrive faster. Surge pricing kicks in 2AM-4AM โ expect 1.5x to 3x normal rates. Avoid Grab during this window if you can; use baht bus or walk if the area is safe.
Why Grab over street taxis: Fixed pricing means no overcharging. Driver details are known upfront. You can rate and report drivers. At 3AM when you're drunk, Grab is infinitely safer than flagging down a random taxi and arguing about price.
Best for: Late-night returns to hotel, airport transfers, any ride where safety matters more than saving 50 THB. See our Pattaya airport guide for detailed Grab pricing to the airport.
Motorcycle taxis (motorbike riders with orange or red vests) park in clusters on Beach Road, Second Road, and walking street. They're fast โ 3km ride takes 5-10 minutes. Cost is negotiated: 40-100 THB for short distances, 100-200+ for longer rides. Always agree on price before getting on.
The risk: Drivers are aggressive. Traffic is chaotic. Pattaya drivers treat motorbikes as second-class. Accidents happen. If you're drunk, the risk goes up dramatically โ your coordination is shot, the driver might be reckless, and a crash on a motorbike is life-altering.
Best for: Quick daytime trips, short distances when sober, if you're comfortable on bikes. Not recommended after 2AM or when impaired. Always wear the helmet (drivers are required to provide one).
Meter taxis are rare in Pattaya. A few operate from the airport and some higher-end hotels. If you see one with the meter running, use it โ it's cheaper than negotiating. Most Pattaya "taxis" are unmarked vans or cars, operated by touts who will overcharge tourists aggressively. 250-500 THB for a ride that baht bus covers for 10 THB.
The scam: Tout says "500 THB Walking Street" before you agree. You're standing outside a bar at 1AM, tired, and say "okay." Should have been 150-200 on Grab or 10 on baht bus. Always use Grab or baht bus. If forced to negotiate with a tout, cut your initial offer in half and walk away if they won't budge.
For airport transfers, skip street taxis entirely. Use Grab (with surge pricing, still cheaper and safer than touts) or book a hotel shuttle in advance. See our airport guide for detailed transfer options and actual prices.
Motorbike rentals are everywhere in Pattaya. 300-500 THB per day for a basic automatic bike. You'll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) or Thai motorcycle license. Some rental shops ask for a deposit or passport copy as collateral.
The reality: Renting a motorbike for nightlife is a terrible idea. Pattaya traffic is aggressive. Drunk driving accidents are common. You're in a foreign country on an unfamiliar bike. One crash costs medical bills, bike repairs, and a ruined trip. The Thai police can stop you and fine you 500-1,000 THB for no helmet or invalid license.
Best for: Daytime exploring (temples, markets) when sober and experienced with manual transmission bikes. Not for getting to and from bars. Not for anyone impaired. If you're thinking "I'll be careful," skip it and use Grab.
Car rentals are rare and expensive in Pattaya. 1,500+ THB per day, and you're stuck dealing with traffic and parking issues. Not worth it for nightlife. Skip it and use Grab.
Walking: Soi Buakhao to Walking Street is a 20-minute walk if sober. Walking from your hotel at 3AM drunk is a recipe for getting lost, robbed, or hit by a motorbike. Use Grab. Within Soi Buakhao itself, everything is walkable โ distances are short.
Best for: Walking is free and safe during daylight. For nightlife and late-night returns, use baht bus or Grab. Check our Pattaya main guide for area breakdowns and walking distances.
