Visa exempt visitors get 30 days stay with zero paperwork. Visa on arrival visitors get 15 days for 2,000 THB. Both can be extended. Most Western passport holders (US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia) are visa exempt and don't need this guide. But if you're from India, China, Kazakhstan, Russia, or other VOA countries, this is critical.

See our first-time visitor guide for overall Pattaya preparation before arrival.

Visa on Arrival: Eligible Countries

Thailand offers visa on arrival to approximately 19 nationalities. If your country is listed here, you can obtain a 15-day tourist visa at the airport without pre-approval from a Thai embassy.

🇮🇳
India
Indian nationals qualify for VOA. Process: 30–60 minutes typical. High volume during peak season — arrive early to avoid long waits.
🇨🇳
China
Chinese passport holders get VOA. Suvarnabhumi Airport has dedicated VOA counters for Chinese nationals. Expect 45–90 minutes during peak times.
🇷🇺
Russia
Russian citizens eligible for VOA. Standard 15-day tourist visa. Same process and cost (2,000 THB) as other VOA nationalities.
🇰🇿
Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan nationals qualify. VOA desk at Suvarnabhumi and other major airports. 30–45 minute typical process.
🇵🇰
Pakistan
Pakistani passport holders get VOA. Follow standard process. Staff familiar with high volume from Pakistan.
🌏
Others
Vietnam, Ukraine, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia also qualify. Check Thai immigration website for complete list — it updates occasionally.

Visa Exempt: No Visa Needed (30 Days)

If your nationality is listed below, you do not need a visa. Simply show your passport at immigration and get 30 days without paying anything. This is the easiest entry option.

Western Countries (All Exempt)

United States, United Kingdom, European Union (all 27 countries), Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand.

Other Exempt Nationalities

Israel, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritius, Seychelles, Iceland, Cyprus, Malta, Monaco, Andorra, San Marino, Vatican, and others. Total: 60+ countries. If you're from a developed Western nation, you're almost certainly exempt.

Check the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs official list if unsure. Visa exempt status is based on reciprocal agreements — if Thailand exempts your country, yours exempts Thailand citizens.

Visa on Arrival: Cost & Process

Cost: 2,000 THB (USD 55–60)

Visa on arrival costs exactly 2,000 Thai Baht. No negotiation. Bring Thai cash or USD (banks at airports exchange USD at poor rates — better to have THB). Credit cards may not work at the desk.

Required Documents

Passport
Valid for 6+ months from arrival date. Passport must have blank pages. VOA uses one full page for the visa stamp and accompanying stickers.
Return Ticket
Onward or return ticket proof. Can be flight confirmation (printed or digital), bus/train booking, or hotel reservation showing departure date.
Cash Proof
Proof of 10,000 THB minimum funds. Can be cash, bank statement, or travelers checks. Officers rarely verify but technically required.
Photo
One passport photo (4 cm x 6 cm). Bring 2 as backup. Photos available at airport for 20 THB if forgotten, but expect queue delays.

The Process (Step by Step)

Step 1: Locate VOA Desk
At Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Phuket International, look for "Visa on Arrival" signs before immigration. Usually to the left of main immigration counters. Large English signage.
Step 2: Get TM.8 Form
Forms available at the desk. Complete the form with your passport details, flight number, duration, and reason (tourism). Take time — errors delay processing.
Step 3: Submit Documents
Hand officer: completed TM.8, passport, photo, return ticket proof, and 2,000 THB cash. Officer reviews everything — expect questions about purpose and funds.
Step 4: Wait
Officer processes application. Takes 30–45 minutes on slow days, 45–90 minutes during peak hours (2–8 PM, weekends). Queues longest at night.
Step 5: Receive Stamp
Officer calls your name or reference number. Receive passport with VOA stamp (15 days from entry date). Stamp shows date, expiry, and terms. Keep it safe.
Step 6: Proceed to Immigration
With stamped passport, proceed to regular immigration for final entry stamp. Usually quick — maybe 5 minutes. They verify your VOA, stamp your entry, and you're done.

Duration & Extension

Visa on Arrival: 15 Days

You get exactly 15 days from the date stamped in your passport. Day 1 is arrival date. Day 15 is your last day. You must leave or extend before midnight on day 15, or face overstay fines (500 THB per day).

Example: Arrive Monday, day 15 is Monday + 14 days later (second Monday). Depart or extend before midnight that day.

Visa Exempt: 30 Days

Visa exempt nationals get 30 days from arrival. More generous than VOA. Same overstay penalties apply — don't exceed 30 days or pay fines.

Most repeat visitors to Pattaya hold visa exempt status (Western passport holders) or use ED (Education) or Elite visas for longer stays.

Extension: Add 7 More Days (1,900 THB)

You can extend your VOA (or visa exempt) stay by 7 additional days at any Thai immigration office. Total: 22 days for VOA, 37 days for exempt. Cost: 1,900 THB. Takes 1–2 days processing (some locations do same-day).

Extension process: Go to Pattaya Immigration (Bang Lamung or South Pattaya), bring passport, completed TM.7 form, photo, and 1,900 THB. Staff are used to tourists — process is straightforward. Plan this for day 10–12 to get processed by day 15 if needed.
