Thailand offers visa on arrival to 19+ countries. Cost: 2,000 THB. Process: 30–90 minutes at the airport. No pre-approval needed. Know your eligibility and what documents you need.
Thailand has simplified travel entry. Most visitors fall into one of two categories: visa exempt (60+ nationalities) or visa on arrival (19+ nationalities). Check your passport nation first — it determines what you need at the airport.
Visa exempt visitors get 30 days stay with zero paperwork. Visa on arrival visitors get 15 days for 2,000 THB. Both can be extended. Most Western passport holders (US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia) are visa exempt and don't need this guide. But if you're from India, China, Kazakhstan, Russia, or other VOA countries, this is critical.
See our first-time visitor guide for overall Pattaya preparation before arrival.
Thailand offers visa on arrival to approximately 19 nationalities. If your country is listed here, you can obtain a 15-day tourist visa at the airport without pre-approval from a Thai embassy.
If your nationality is listed below, you do not need a visa. Simply show your passport at immigration and get 30 days without paying anything. This is the easiest entry option.
United States, United Kingdom, European Union (all 27 countries), Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand.
Israel, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritius, Seychelles, Iceland, Cyprus, Malta, Monaco, Andorra, San Marino, Vatican, and others. Total: 60+ countries. If you're from a developed Western nation, you're almost certainly exempt.
Check the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs official list if unsure. Visa exempt status is based on reciprocal agreements — if Thailand exempts your country, yours exempts Thailand citizens.
Visa on arrival costs exactly 2,000 Thai Baht. No negotiation. Bring Thai cash or USD (banks at airports exchange USD at poor rates — better to have THB). Credit cards may not work at the desk.
You get exactly 15 days from the date stamped in your passport. Day 1 is arrival date. Day 15 is your last day. You must leave or extend before midnight on day 15, or face overstay fines (500 THB per day).
Example: Arrive Monday, day 15 is Monday + 14 days later (second Monday). Depart or extend before midnight that day.
Visa exempt nationals get 30 days from arrival. More generous than VOA. Same overstay penalties apply — don't exceed 30 days or pay fines.
Most repeat visitors to Pattaya hold visa exempt status (Western passport holders) or use ED (Education) or Elite visas for longer stays.
You can extend your VOA (or visa exempt) stay by 7 additional days at any Thai immigration office. Total: 22 days for VOA, 37 days for exempt. Cost: 1,900 THB. Takes 1–2 days processing (some locations do same-day).
Extension process: Go to Pattaya Immigration (Bang Lamung or South Pattaya), bring passport, completed TM.7 form, photo, and 1,900 THB. Staff are used to tourists — process is straightforward. Plan this for day 10–12 to get processed by day 15 if needed.

Suvarnabhumi Airport (Bangkok) is the main entry point for Thailand. The VOA desk is located in the Immigration Hall, Level 1. Look for large "Visa on Arrival" signs.
Pro tip: Arrive at Bangkok with early morning or overnight flights for shortest VOA queues. Afternoon flights hit peak queue times.
